INSPIRATIONS

I was drawn to the clean simplicity of imagery that was contained in a rectangle on white; the effect was a contrasting fresh modern look. For the interior I wanted an array of images and columns to add visual interest, but to be clearly and simply aligned to make for easy reading.

STYLE

I chose the right model over the left to express more vulnerability of the situation and the confessions involved in the #metoo movement, which brought awareness to sexual harassment and assault. The writing on the old worn out photo says "Looking Forward" in a cheerful and elegant type, as if someone is looking back at an old photo of themselves, and hoping / working for a better future.

For the LGBTQIA+ Spectrum issue, I used the title text as a pattern to make the lines of a rainbow flag.

I originally planned to at least incorporate the transgender, asexual, and intersex pride colors in to the composition but it didn't read well, so I focused on the rainbow pattern to convey the issue topic.

For a diversity issue in honor of Black History Month, I used an old photo from a newspaper article in a discontinued textbook from the 1960's. I used the photo as a silhouette to hold type that references the words of Martin Luther King Jr. and other prominent activists of color. The subtext was inspired by an article, but since reviewing the text I have decided to change it to "Life in Color" to cater to all readers.

This issue revolves around the topic of censorship, which is shown by censorship "tape" over the figure's mouth. The original plan was to have bands behind the figure, but I found during photo editing that it was more striking to have a single band across the mouth, with the hands up trying to break it.

INTERIOR LAYOUT

The aim of the interior layout was to provide a clean frame to showcase bold, strong images with important columns and text. I also included photos of contributors to create a sense of personal connection with the writers and editors.
